Sneak Peek

I’m sorry about the previous post being locked – it’s got a lot of information that’s not quite public domain yet.  But the general idea, I can give you….

Before Bill Wyatt passed in 2009, he and I had a talk about getting somebody to replicate his silk reel design.

These nice folks stepped up.  I met Roy and Henry at SOAR last October, and they agreed to give it a try.  We’re in the process of testing the prototype.

Yaay, silk!

Oo! I want it! I've been trying to hack together something to reel silk on, no matter how inefficient, just to try it, and largely failing. I'm about ready to give up and try using an umbrella swift. Even a plain skein winder like you used to use has been a bit beyond my means lately. Of course, one of these will be out of reach for a good long while. But I want it!

That looks to be a GOOD reason to not post for a while; everything's OK, right? That first post was somewhat alarming!

That reel of silk is very pretty to look at. That's also some fine woodworking. I can totally picture it stained, but would staining and sealing it detract from being able to use it with the silk? Or would it just depend on what sealant is used?

Oh yay! Looks awesome. I love the very well-made carders I have from C&C, and they're an easy road trip from me now.

You could not have chosen a better company to recreate this treasure!

Hey, do you still keep bees? We have a hive for the second time in our yard of honey bees. I'm thinking of just letting them stay since I've heard for years that their numbers are dwindling.

I have had no success with bees. I still have all the wooden-ware and supplies, but no current bees. Are they making wax, or just hanging out in the cluster?
Jun. 25th, 2013 08:21 pm (UTC)
How do I tell without getting stung? They made about 4 pounds of honey last time in a container the size of a 2-gallon bucket.

If it's just a resting swarm waiting to go somewhere else, they will just hang in a big beard. If they start to make wax, eventually you'll see it sticking out of the mass of bees like ribs. If they're making honey, they're making wax.

Would you mind Personal Messaging me your contact info, or is your old Yahoo! address still good?
